Our Trip to the Aran Islands

We heard from a couple sources that the Aran Islands are spectacular. Looking at the weather forecast this morning, it looked like today was the best chance of no rain. So, we bought tickets at the hostel for the day trip to the Aran Islands.

We left at 9:30 am and took an hour bus trip to the ferry dock. We then boarded the ferry for a 45-minute ride to Inishmore, the largest island. Once on the island, we rented bikes and headed off for our day's adventure.

The island has about 800 inhabitants - beyond those homes and a few small businesses, it is very rural with beautiful views of the ocean. The land is extremely rocky and everywhere you look, you see Ireland's dry stone walls.

We rode first to the ancient fort, Dun Aonghasa, where the original construction was was done in 1100 B.C. The fort is on the edge of these huge cliffs that drop down about 300 feet - you can walk right up to the edge of the cliff, lay down and look over the edge.

After the fort, we rode our bikes to another location on the island called "The Worm Hole." The Worm Hole is a naturally rectangular shape pool into which the sea ebbs and flows.

We biked back to the ferry at 4:30 pm and got back to our hostel at 6:30 pm. We then had dinner out at an Italian restaurant on Quay street.

A fun day exploring a beautiful place!
