We had a second lovely day and decided to capitalize on the weather with a bike trip in Killarney National Park. We walked into town in the morning, rented six bikes, and then rode to Ross Castle inside the park. Ross Castle is on Lough Lake, one of three lakes in the park. We planned to take a 1.5 hour boat trip through the lakes to Lord Brandon's Cottage which is the jump-off point for biking the Gap of Dunloe.
The river trip was beautiful and our boat operator regaled us with information about the park and the area. Once we got off at Lord Brandon's Cottage, we had lunch at a little cafe located there. The food was good and the view was spectacular.
After lunch, we climbed on our bikes ready to tackle the 22 kilometers back to Killarney - we'd been told the first part of the trail was uphill followed by a longer stretch of downhill. We were pleasantly surprised by the trail thinking it might be a gravel trail, but it was paved. The scenery was beautiful and we had a wonderful day.
After our ride, several of us stopped at O'Connors for a pint before heading back to our lodge.
After a break, we walked into town and had dinner with lots of lively discussion. We also spent some time planning for the next day. A few of us stayed after dinner to listen to some Irish music before heading home for the night.
