All the weather forecasts were indicating 100% chance of rain for today, so we decided to drive to Cork for the day. When we woke up, the weather outside looked great - we heard from someone that the only prediction you can make about Ireland's weather is that it is totally unpredictable!
Because the morning was sunny, we decided to stop off at the Muckross House & Gardens first - a part of the Killarney National Park we didn't see yesterday.
The Muckross house was built for Henry and Mary Herbert - the building was started in 1839 and completed in 1843. In 1932, the house, gardens, and estate was presented to Ireland and became the basis of the first national park in Ireland.
The home faces the lake and the grounds around the home are spectacular.
After our time at the Muckross House, we headed out towards Cork which was supposed to be about 1.5 hours from Killarney. Much of the drive was through the beautiful countryside - however, we did run into a long detour on a very narrow road. There was quite a bit of traffic on the detour that went very slowly due to the fact that everytime two trucks needed to pass each other, both sides slowed down to almost a stop.
When we finally got to Cork, the weather was gray and cloudy (no rain, however). We went to the English Market (a large covered indoor market) and bought some lunch which we ended up eating outside on the street as there wasn't any place to sit down in the Market.
We debated what to do after our late lunch, but decided to head back to Killarney knowing that we would have a longer trip back due to the detour. We had a low-key day, but at least we will be able to say we had a chance to "see Cork."
We're taking a break and then meeting for dinner - our last night in Killarney.
