Ireland Driving Adventure

Before we left home, we certainly heard other people's "Ireland driving stories" - now we have one of our own!

The first challenge is finding a car in Europe that is big enough for 6 people and their luggage. We had reserved a 7-passenger car, but basically it would fit 7 people with no luggage. So the first thing we did was change to a bigger (more expensive) car. Next, we had to see if we could fit ourselves and our luggage in the bigger car. Success!

Greg was our designated "left-side-of-road" driver and Andrew was his co-pilot helping him navigate multiple highways and roundabouts as we headed south to Killarney. Believe me, as passengers in the back seat it feels very strange. We all felt that the tendency of the driver is to drift to the left. At one point someone said, "Mom, your gasps are probably making Dad more stressed."

At one point when Greg was going around a left curve, he drifted into a curb and we heard the sound of the car making contact with the curb. When we finally arrived at the Old Weir Lodge and parked, we discovered we had lost a hub cap.

So while everyone was settling in at the lodge, Greg and I drove about 20 kilometers to another town and were able to buy a new hub cap. It gave us both some more practice.

While we were there, the service man attached cable ties to all four hub caps so in the event that Greg starts drifting again, at least we won't lose another hub cap. As the service man said, "could have been so much worse!"

After getting back to the lodge, we talked about our plans for tomorrow and then walked into town for dinner. Our goal was to stay up as much of the day as possible without sleeping and we did!
